Plan your journey
Identify the route and interchanges that you want  to take as well as the rest areas for rest stops. Use a map to plan your journey.

Have adequate rest
Avoid driving during the late night and early morning hours, which are body's natural
    sleep times.
Heavy meals or long working hours can make you feel tired and drowsy and thus,
    affect your concentration.

Avoid taking alcohols or drugs that can make you feel  drowsy or affect your concentration

Avoid taking food which are high in sugar as it can make you feel tired and drowsy.

Avoid negative feelings such as anger before you drive

They may cause you to ignore traffic rules such as over speeding, dangerous driving and so on.

Check your vehicle especially before embarking on a long journey
Check your engine parts such as engine oil, battery fan belt and radiator fluids.
 
Check your headlights, signals, brake lights and hazard lights.
Check your tyre pressure condition, thread and spare tyre. Make sure your spare tyre is
    well inflated.
 
Check your vehicle braking response, brake fluids and handbrake.
 
Check your wipers.
